What is a Military Ball?
A military ball is a formal event attended by those serving in the military along with guests. Each branch of the military typically hosts their own ball. There is a Army Ball, Navy Ball, Air Force Ball, Marine Corps Ball, and Coast Guard Ball. All of these are hosted on different dates in military communities across the world.
The army was founded on June 14th 1775 so in most army communities the celebration is held on June 14th every year. The army ball is held in remembrance of fallen soldiers. The event starts with a cocktail hour followed by the blowing of a bugle indicating dinner hour is beginning and it is time to find your seats. There will be a program at your table that will show you the timing of the events for the rest of the evening.
The Navy Ball is held on October 13th each year in celebration of Navy being founded on October 13th 1775. Expect the evening to include a keynote speaker, dinner, cake cutting ceremony, and musical performances.
The Air Force was formed on September 18, 1947 and thus the ball is held every year on that day or a date near that day. This day is not as strictly held for the ball and some communities may host the ball on different days. The Air Force Ball is also more inclusive as far as more civilians being included in the celebration.
The Marine Corps Ball date is based on a resolution from November 10, 1775 and has been held every year since 1925. Expect a cake cutting ceremony, a guest speaker, and a message read to celebrate the birthday of the Marine Corps.
The Coast Guard was formed on August 4, 1790 and this is when the ball is held each year. The event includes a cocktail hour, a dinner hour, and then dancing.
The military balls have many traditions that vary by military branch so if it is your first time attending it is a good idea to become familiar with the traditions and etiquette involved.
What Do You Wear to a Military Ball?
Service members attending the ball typically wear one of their uniforms. While all of the military balls are formal, some are more formal than others. Guests or spouses should take the type of uniform being worn as an indication of how formal the event will be.
Male guests of a service member should wear a dark suit or tuxedo. For female guests of a service member, a floor length gown is the typical choice or if the ball is less formal then a dress that falls below the knee.
Dress choices should be something classy and less revealing. Some prefer to color coordinate with the uniform but really any color is appropriate as long as the dress is not too flashy. Think elegant and traditional when choosing a dress.
